She and Humphrey were almost at Elsie’s house when she remembered — Jonah! She’d promised Granny she’d invite him to supper. They hurried across the churchyard back to his house. The wagon was still out front. The horse, Kibby, neighed and snorted when he saw them. He was in the same spot as yesterday, which was strange. Jonah usually brought him around back to graze this time of day.

They knocked on the door, but there was no answer.

“Look!” Humphrey cried, pointing to a small black mound on the ground near the door.

Elsie’s stomach flipped when she realized it was the black rat. It was dead, its small tongue hanging from its open jaw. Maggots squirmed all over it.

A feeling of dread came over Elsie.

She took a breath and opened the door.
